TRIP REPORT MAY 18, 2007

We underwent our annual USCG inspection. Mr. Steegle ran us through some drills that we passed with flying colors. I was personally very satisfied with the crew response to all questions and the drills ran flawlessly. I have worked with several of the crew in the past and trust them without reservation and was pleasantly surprised to see the new crew members (Clint, Malena, and Bob) perform like a cohesive team. Afterwards, our beautiful ladies gussied up for some pirate pics and a crew pic on the Olympus dock.

TRIP REPORT MAY 19, 2007

We decided to do some diving (you know the crew has to personally check out the wrecks before we can allow passengers to dive them........ ;).........). The Schurz was successfully hooked by Bob with Will supervising and Mike did a great job getting them on the wreck. The vis was around 50 feet and the temp was low 70's. Malena successfully pulled off her first unhook job despite the safety chain being mangled to the point of 5 links being broken. The second dive was on the Aeolus where Bob tied us in. Capt. Jim harvested three flounder but bagged only two. Clint performed the unhooking duties and we motored home with Malena getting her feet wet at the helm for the last hour. Danny, the Olympus mate, graciously parted with a beautiful 29 inch gag grouper to supplement the cookout we had on Al's deck. Fresh fish, beans, salads, corn on the cob, and plenty of libation went over real big.

TRIP REPORT MAY 20, 2007

Sunday saw the seas heavy enough to send most of the Morehead City fleet back to port. When we heard Leroy making the turn, we decided to put the boat back in the slip and do some painting and metalwork on the life raft cage and get the boat ready for the first charter of the year with Dale Wichman's Commonwealth Divers.

We wish to extend a great thanks to Capt. Al and Capt. Amy of the Mutiny andAtlantic beach Diving services and their great crew for 2 wonderful days ofdiving. We started out on Monday morning from the Olympus docks with 2 to 3 ft seas and a bumpy ride out to the U-352. On the way out the Capt. and crew showed their wonderful training when they had to conduct their first rescue. If it wasn’t for the expert boat handling of the Captain and theunselfishness of the mate Will.....Stubbies lunch would been shark food. Butall was saved and everyone was able to enjoy lunch. Now we know, IglooPlaymates float. When we finally got to the sub we were tied into the bow. Most of us enjoyed a bottom temp of 69 degrees and a good 60 to 70 ft. of vis. You noticed Imentioned most of us enjoyed the dive. I forgot to mention a couple on theboat really couldn’t keep lunch down. This was one of the prettiest dives on the Sub in a while. We counted at least 15 Lionfish. One Grouper was wounded by Capt. Al and somehow Kent ended up with it in his goodie bag. He is still thanking Al for sure for that dinner. The current picked up a notch on the second dive on the Sub. but we managed to enjoy the bottom time. The seas laid down for us on the way back to the dock and the rest of the charter was finally able to eat something. On Tuesday we had a uneventful ride out to the Papoose with flat calm seas and beautiful blue water. We tied up on the stern(Capt. Al, you did switch those numbers didn’t you) and descended down to about 80 to 100ft vis with a bottom temp of 74 degrees. We again must have counted at least a dozen or so Lionfish. A couple of divers finally got their first close-up of a sand tiger shark swimming at least 2 feet away from them. You should have seen the smile on their face. No, I meant the divers face, not the shark. We hated to leave the wonderful conditions on the Papoose but opted to take a chance on the conditions on the Schurz. We tied into the boilers and descended to about 60 to 80ft. of vis and a bottom temp. of 76 degrees. We weren't disappointed either with the marine life. As always the fish were so thick you had to be on the wreck to see it. Again, we must have counted over a dozen Lionfish. There were a couple of southern rays about 6ft in width spotted on the stern. We finally headed to the dock and the end of the charter for this time but there is a definite taste for the next charter in July. All in all it was a great two days and we're all looking forward to going back soon.
